Because glass has light transmission and reflection, and is easy to color, it is often used in occasions that have certain requirements for light and color, such as optical instruments and various art decoration. Modern technology has brought new vitality and energy to the glass industry, but also the performance of glass has been greatly improved. We will briefly introduce the characteristics of quartz glass tubes and explain why quartz can be used as optical glass.
First, what are the characteristics of quartz glass tubes

1. High temperature resistance
The softening point temperature of quartz glass is about 1730℃, which can be used for a long time at 1100℃, and the temperature of short time use can be as high as 1450℃.
2. Corrosion resistance
In addition to hydrofluoric acid, quartz glass almost does not react with other acids, and its acid resistance is 30 times that of ceramics, 150 times that of stainless steel, especially its chemical stability at high temperatures, which is unmatched by any other engineering materials.
3. Good thermal stability
The thermal expansion coefficient of quartz glass is small, can withstand drastic temperature changes, quartz glass is heated to about 1100℃, and it will not burst into normal temperature water.
4. Good light transmission performance
Quartz glass has good light transmission performance in the entire spectral band from ultraviolet to infrared, and the visible light transmittance is above 95%, especially in the ultraviolet spectral region, the transmittance can reach more than 80%.
5. Good electrical insulation performance
The resistance value of quartz glass is equivalent to 10,000 times that of ordinary glass, which is a better electrical insulation material and has good electrical properties even at high temperatures. Because of its excellent physical and chemical properties, quartz glass is widely used in various fields such as electric light source, semiconductor, optical communication, military, metallurgy, building materials, chemistry, machinery, electric power, environmental protection and so on.
Second, why can quartz make optical glass
The optical properties of quartz glass are unique, which can pass through the far ultraviolet spectrum, which is better than all ultraviolet materials, and can pass through the visible light and near infrared spectrum. Users can choose the desired variety from 185-3500m μ-band according to their needs. Because the quartz glass is resistant to high temperature, the coefficient of thermal expansion is small, the chemical thermal stability is good, the bubble, the streak, the uniformity, the birefringence can be comparable to the general optical glass, so it is an essential optical material for working in a variety of harsh occasions with high stability optical system.
The structure, impurity content, OH genetic factor and NO, CO content of quartz glass are the main factors affecting the spectral transmittance. The absorption peak at 0.24 μm is caused by poor oxygen atom binding. The quartz glass containing OH group has an obvious absorption peak at 2.7 μm due to molecular vibration. The low UV transmittance is mainly caused by atomic absorption spectra caused by metal impurities.
